Training & development
Community pharmacy is changing and in the future pharmacists’ medical expertise will be crucial in delivering NHS England’s Long-Term Plan. All pharmacy team members will have opportunities to update their skills to help them provide the services the NHS needs.
A number of national (and local) organisations develop and design learning resources and campaigns for pharmacy professionals at all stages of their career to help improve performance, boost productivity and keep community pharmacists, and their staff teams, abreast of industry developments as they happen.
Your LPCs (and PSNC) also deliver practical, up-to-the-minute learning on topical issues that can be applied straight away, usually by webinar. See our ‘events’.

The three LPCs in Sussex and Surrey have decided not to offer local flu training in 2021 because there is now a significant number of providers now providing this training either online or face-to-face.
All pharmacy staff involved in the provision of the Flu Vaccination Service should receive appropriate training relevant to the role they will undertake. There is a free optional Flu Champion module for pharmacy staff to complete to enhance their knowledge in the provision of Flu vaccination which can support pharmacists with the service The course includes a workbook, online assessment, certificate and Flu Champion badge. Pharmacists must complete a Declaration of Competence before providing the service and this declaration must be updated every two years. The Declaration of Competence Group has published a Vaccination Services DoC (Version 3, August 2019) on the CPPE website. Pharmacists are required to complete this every two years as part of the requirements to be able to offer the NHS Flu Vaccination Service.
Following a review of the previous version of the DoC, which is hosted on the Centre for Pharmacy Postgraduate Education (CPPE) website, the learning and assessment has been reviewed and the CPPE Immunisation programme has been withdrawn. This has been replaced with key modules from e-Learning for Healthcare on Flu Immunisation.
Face to face training: NHSE&I has determined that pharmacists providing the Flu Vaccination Service need to attend face-to-face training for both injection technique and basic life support (including administration of adrenaline) at least every three years.
Who needs F2F: A pharmacist who last undertook face-to-face training for both injection technique and basic life support in 2017 and would have needed to undertake face-to-face training in 2020 but deferred this due to the pandemic, and those who last undertook face-to-face training for both injection technique and basic life support in 2018, will need to complete their face-to face training in 2021.
The LPC are not offering any face to face training, however here are a number of organisations that provide vaccination training for pharmacists here are some of the providers (there are other providers available on PSNC website here.

The public health agenda is embedded in pharmacy, yet topics such as emergency contraception or stop smoking support are as prevalent as ever. As well as public health workshops, pharmacies should use this section to access a wide range of resources to assure and maintain competence, all underpinned by the Declaration of Competence system.
